Before jumping to the main topic, let us first talk about the reward system of our body. The rewards system could be described as rewarding stimuli. The brain increases the release of neurotransmitters (dopamine) when it experiences a rewarding stimulus. This dopamine in exchange makes us feel happy. The rewarding stimulus could be anything from eating food, drinking sugary drinks (that taste very good) to watching beautiful scenes of nature and experiencing something beautiful.
Watching/experiencing sex is also one of the rewarding stimuli that humans can experience so it causes a rush of dopamine through their body hence making them happy. Porn does the same thing to us. You might be wondering that if the porn makes us happy, why is this guy ranting about it? You’ll know.
Problems:
Corrupts your reward system:
The easy exposure of dopamine with just a few clicks is the main reason for the corruption of your reward system. In this constantly busy world, the need for instant gratification is fulfilled by porn while sex takes time and effort. In recent studies, there has been a surge in the percentage of people who prefer porn over sex. In other words, since the need to be instantly happy is fulfilled by porn, the actual sex which requires a huge amount of work from both sides isn’t cherished anymore. The need to switch to the less effortful task has been deeply rooted in human beings and this easier task (porn) makes us even lazier.
Porn is a Fantasy-land:
Porn is like a fairy-tale compared to real sex life. The real sex is nothing like the way, it is shown in porn. If you would have ever ridden a bike, you must have noticed that after traveling at 90-100+ km/hr for a while, 50 km/hr seems very slow when you know that 50 km/hr is also a decent speed. This happens because the constant exposure to high speed has desensitized you to the lower though considerably higher speed. A similar thing happens when you give yourself the constant exposure of highly erotic porn. The highly arousing porn scenes desensitize you to the real experience. Hence excessive porn consumption causes the problem of delayed/no arousal in women and erectile dysfunction in men.
Appetite for violence:
As they say, “Today’s workout is tomorrow’s warm-up”. Similarly, over sometime normal porn which already is quite abnormal compared to real-life will start looking too plain to you, you will not experience the similar levels of arousal you used to feel when you used to watch a similar genre. And you will start shifting to as they say spicier alternatives like hardcore, rough, brutal, BDSM, etc to experience the similar levels of arousal. Hence it is not only desensitizing you to the real experience but also increasing your appetite for violence.
My opinions:
The constant hunger for abuse porn and extreme scenes is harming amateurs in the porn industry. Your choices are not only affecting you but they are also indirectly affecting someone far away from your touch. Also, real sex and porn have nothing in common. A coarse play of hand could never simulate the feel of real human touch. And porn is misguiding teenagers into believing whatever fantasy-land they are trying to create. I am not a firm believer in no-fap, but I firmly believe in no-porn.
